Call for applications: TDR Fellowship on Project Management of Tropical Diseases Research (*)

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the WHO South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) invite nationals from the WHO South East Asia Region (SEA) to apply for a 12-24 month fellowship on Project Management of Tropical Diseases Research. The training involves a placement in the WHO Regional Office (New Delhi) working with the professional staff involved located in the Departments of Communicable Diseases (CDS) and Health System Development (HSD)

Summary of the Training Programme and Activities

Under the supervision of CDS and VBC/SEARO-TDR/SEARO focal point, the successful candidate will perform the following tasks:

  • In coordination with the technical units involved in TDR/SEARO, assist VBC/SEARO unit-the focal point TDR/SEARO in administration of SEARO/TDR Small Grants Scheme including: preparation of call for applications, review of proposals for funding, preparing and conducting Selection Committee meetings.
  • Assist VBC/SEARO-TDR/SEARO focal point in preparation of TSA for selected projects, active follow-up of the projects’ implementation, analysis of reports, disseminating the new research information and promoting utilisation of the results by the control programmes. 
  • Promote TDR activities at all levels with the aim of improving tropical disease control in SEA countries including preparation of research methodology workshops, strengthen coordination and communication among all relevant units in SEARO and TDR/HQ.
  • Develop comprehensive SEARO/TDR computerized database based on the already available database for SEARO/TDR Small Grant Scheme. Produce specific outputs from the database (reports, circular letters, website entries, etc.), as needed. 
  • Prepare research portfolio containing summaries of final reports of the research projects to ensure communicating the results of the TDR research projects to all concerned parties.
  • Support TDR/HQ activities in the region as requested by TDR/HQ including site visits, preparation of reports for TDR's Research Strengthening Group (RSG), Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), and the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB).

Eligibility

Applications are requested from nationals of the WHO South East Asia Region working or involved in the Ministries of Health, academic or research institutions and/or who recently completed a period of post-graduate training (M.Sc., MD or Ph.D.). Preference will be given to candidates under 40 years old, holding an advanced degree in health related sciences. Computer skills (MS Office) are required. A good working knowledge of English is required.

Application

1. Full name in capital letters with the family name underlined.

2. Date of birth and nationality (please include scanned copy of information page of passport or other identification document).

3. Name, address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address of institution where the applicant is employed (if applicable).

4. Educational qualifications, including place of study, date of conclusion and grade obtained (transcripts and photocopies of qualifications are not required but may be requested later).

5. A brief description of the applicant's current post and of the post held immediately before (1 page).

6. A description of the applicant's current work/research interests and how this fellowship would contribute to the applicant's future career (1 page maximum).

7. A list of the applicant's publications and other abstracts or presentations.

8. A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professors/supervisors that includes their address, telephone numbers, fax numbers and e-mail addresses. (Please include with the application).

9. An endorsement from the director of the applicant's home institution testifying to the ability of the applicant to successfully undertake the proposed fellowship and certifying that the applicant, if awarded TDR support, will be granted a leave of absence and on completing the training will be assured of a post. The director must also indicate how the proposed fellowship will strengthen the capabilities of the institution. 

Applicants from countries requiring national endorsement should submit their applications through proper government channels. A copy of all applications should be sent to the WHO Representative's Office in their home country for information purposes.

All applications must be received by 31 October 2005

Fellowship is planned to start in January 2006

(*) The above Fellowship is a time-limited post-graduate training opportunity funded by TDR. The Fellowship will be in the SEA Regional Office located in New Delhi, India. The monthly stipend is set at US$1800 per month in addition to other minor benefits. The duration of the Fellowship is initial one-year, renewable for a second year subject to mutual agreement.
