Functional Genomics of Malaria Parasites

An HHMI[1]/EMBO[2]/TDR practical course

Overview

Reverse genetic techniques have become proven and essential tools for laboratories studying the biological role of proteins and genes in the malaria parasite.

The aim of this course is to equip participants with the necessary expertise to construct transgenic Plasmodium falciparum (human) and Plasmodium berghei (rodent) parasites and to apply knowledge gained in their home laboratories.

Who should apply

PhD students and postdoctoral scientists with previous experience in molecular techniques, and a thorough understanding of molecular biology and cell biology - but not necessarily with Plasmodium.

Applications

Sorry but applications have now closed.

Course components

Lectures and practical sessions covering the following topics:

  • Malaria parasites and their genomes
  • Cultivation, transfection and selection of P. falciparum and P. berghei
  • Transfection vector design and construction
  • Use of drug resistance and visual markers
  • Analysis of transgenic parasites
