Capacity strengthening programme grants are intended to
provide long-term support to institution or research group
development programmes. They are
not intended to support isolated, individual research projects. The
objectives of the grant are to:
- develop research leadership
- promote the development of
infrastructure and research environment
- improve training opportunities
- improve scientific expertise in
biomedical and social sciences
- improve information and
communications systems
- foster opportunities for
scientific collaboration.
Applications for capacity
strengthening programme grants
are restricted to least developed, high disease burden, low income
countries.
Proposals are reviewed on the basis
of scientific soundness, research relevance, and explicitness of
expected outcomes.
Financial support can be for an
initial period of one to three years, subject to annual review and
satisfactory progress. The annual budget is around 80 000 US
dollars. Long-term support is considered on a case-by-case basis.
