Rationale
Implementation of
disease control strategies depends on accurate diagnostic methods
for surveillance and case finding. In many instances, the most
pressing need is for improved diagnostics to assist in the 'wider
and wiser' use of effective therapies. In addition, drug
resistance has now loomed as a complication of nearly every
control strategy that depends on drug treatment. In most cases,
diagnostic tools to detect drug resistance are rudimentary or
unavailable. There is thus an urgent need to develop simple and
robust diagnostic tests.
As a recently
developed area of work, diagnostics activities in TDR currently
focus on two disease areas - TB and sexually transmitted diseases
- through work carried out by the Tuberculosis
Diagnostic Initiative (TBDI) and the Sexually Transmitted
Diseases Diagnostic Initiative (SDI).
